Chapter 15

I still can’t believe yesterday happened. I’ve been replaying the entire day in my head over and over again. Every word, every touch, it’s all on a loop in my brain. I don’t know what this means but I can’t help the smile that has been plastered on my face all day. I haven’t seen Marco at all today, but I’m kind of happy about that. I don’t want to seem like a fool, especially if things didn’t mean the same thing to him.

The door to the powder room clicks closed behind me. Down at the other end of the hall, I see my friend walking my way.

“Kadey!” I yell. “Where the heck have you been? I’ve been texting you nonstop and you haven’t answered a single one. I’ve been worried sick about you.”

“I’m sorry. My phone got shut off and I’ve been dealing with some personal stuff. Marco knew I was going to be gone. He didn’t tell you?”

Of course, he knew. All it would have taken was a single conversation informing me of what’s going on. Then again, he doesn’t seem to ever offer me any information willingly.

Her eyes are bloodshot and there are dark circles under her eyes. Maybe she shouldn’t have come to work today either. Whatever is going on with her seems to be affecting her physically as well.

Kadey tightly grips my arm with one hand while holding her abdomen with the other and says, “Ariana, thank god you found me. I’m having serious cramps. They hit me out of nowhere and I’ve been dying all day.”

“Oh no, are you okay?”

She releases me and nods her head, saying, “Yeah, I’m fine. I just struggle really bad the first day or so of my period. It’s always been this way.”

“That doesn’t sound normal. Have you gotten that checked out by your doctor?”

She waves her hand and says, “It is what it is. But can you do me a favor?”

“Of course, what do you need?”

“All I have left to do is clean Marco’s office. Can you do that for me so I can head home early?”

Clean his office?

That’s the last place I want to go. Since I haven’t seen him all day, I assume he’s been in there. He didn’t tell me yesterday about any trips, but I’m not sure if I’m ready to see him.

“I don’t know Kadey…”

Her hold on my arm tightens and she says, “Please, Ariana. Seriously, I’d owe you one. Big time. I just need to go home, take a long hot shower, some pain meds, and crash for the day. I’ll be back to normal tomorrow.”

I sigh and slightly shake my head. “Fine, but you’ll owe me.”

Kadey squeals and jumps, wrapping her arms around me. “Thank you so much. You’re seriously the best! Now all you need to do is dust his office and sweep up the floor. It shouldn’t take you more than fifteen minutes. Make sure you use the orange microfiber cloth with the orange wood cleanser. I left all the supplies in the hallway next to his door.
